 Significantly lower attenuation below 1100nm makes low OH- the choice for data or power transmission over distances of 100m to 3km and for cabling systems. Low OH- step-index fibers have a uniform refractive index across the core, with an abrupt “step” to lower index at the cladding. Their large core diameter (up to 1500um) and high numerical aperture (0.37) provide efficient coupling to sources, as well as more efficient and less expensive interconnections than either Singlemode or graded-index fibers.
